Moving (Feature film)

This project emerges from a profound reflection on migration: the act of moving, displacing oneself, or shifting spaces, whether driven by choice, necessity, or the search for what remains absent in one's place of origin. My interest in these narratives of departure, uprooting, and absence is rooted in the history of forced displacement within my maternal family, intertwined with my own restlessness regarding life beyond the borders of Colombia. This idea of emigrating, though not always realized, has become a persistent meditation—a state of "being and not being" that has led me to live as a nomad within my own city, inhabiting temporary dwellings while projecting an uncertain future.

The genesis of Mudanzas was further fueled by the pervasive impulse to migrate observed in my inner circle, as family and friends settled in distant geographies. These encounters allowed me to perceive the ambiguity of those who take root in new lands while maintaining a relationship—often fragmented or fictitious—with their country of origin and their mother tongue, inhabiting a complex interstice between cultures. Stories such as those of my father-in-law in London or my aunt Nidia in England exposed the intricate layers of living in a state of constant bifurcation.

From these dialogues and my own longing for transformation, the script evolved into a hybrid form: a travel diary, an album, and a live performance. Mudanzas narrates the fictional odyssey of Marta, a traveler searching for the friends and family who left in a desperate attempt to find their place in the world. On her journey, she arrives at unexpected landscapes where she discovers the diverse facets of migration: from the Latin American "walkers" and the social crises triggered by displacement, to the realities of climate migration, bureaucracy, injustice, and violence. Along her route, Marta encounters mythical beings in seas and deserts, guided by creatures like a whale and a mermaid, with the migratory bird remaining her constant companion.
