This project stems from a reflection on migration: the act of moving, displacing oneself, or changing spaces, whether by choice, necessity, or the impossibility of finding what is desired in one's place of origin. My interest in these narratives of departure, uprooting, and absence originates in the forced displacement of my maternal family, complemented by my own unease about life outside Colombia. This idea of emigrating, though not always realized, has become a constant reflection; a state of "being and not being" that has led me to live as a nomad in my own city, seeking temporary spaces and projecting an uncertain future.
The genesis of Mudanzas was also nourished by the growing need to emigrate observed in my close circle, with family and friends settling in distant geographies. These encounters allowed me to perceive the ambiguity of those who take root in new places while maintaining a relationship, often fictitious, with their country of origin and their language, inhabiting an interstice between cultures. Stories like those of my father-in-law in London or my aunt Nidia in England revealed the complexities of living in this constant bifurcation.
From these dialogues and my own desire for change, the film's script emerged as a travel diary, an album, and a live show. Mudanzas narrates Marta's fictional odyssey, a traveler searching for her friends and family who have left in a desperate attempt to find their place in the world. On her journey, she arrives at unexpected places, where she discovers diverse perspectives on migration: from Latin American migrant walkers and the social problems displacement generates in each country, to climate change migration or the realities of bureaucracy, injustice, and violence. Along her route, Marta encounters mythical beings in seas and deserts, guided by animals such as a bird, a whale, and a mermaid, with the migrant bird being her constant companion.
